1. Introduction to Server Wire-to-Board Connectors

Wire-to-board (WTB) connectors are foundational electromechanical components designed to establish a reliable electrical connection between discrete wire harnesses and printed circuit boards (PCBs) in server hardware systems. As a critical bridge between external wiring assemblies and internal circuit boards, these connectors undertake dual core responsibilities of power transmission and signal communication, serving as an indispensable structural and functional unit in server chassis, storage modules, cooling systems, and peripheral expansion components. In modern data center server architectures characterized by high density, high performance, and high stability, wire-to-board connectors are no longer simple connection accessories but key components that determine the overall operational reliability, power efficiency, and service life of server equipment.

Server-grade wire-to-board connectors differ fundamentally from conventional consumer electronic WTB connectors in terms of design standards, performance parameters, and environmental adaptability. Consumer-grade connectors prioritize miniaturization and cost control, while server-specific products focus on extreme operational stability, high-current bearing capacity, anti-interference performance, and long-term fatigue resistance. Servers typically operate in 7×24-hour continuous working environments with high temperature, high vibration, and strong electromagnetic interference, which puts forward stringent requirements for the structural design, material selection, and manufacturing precision of wire-to-board connectors. A single loose connection, poor contact, or signal attenuation caused by connector failure may lead to server downtime, data loss, or system operation anomalies, resulting in huge economic losses for data center operations.

With the rapid iteration of server technology, from traditional single-socket rack servers to dual-socket high-performance servers, blade servers, and AI GPU accelerated servers, the internal power demand and signal transmission speed of servers have increased exponentially. Traditional low-power, low-speed wire-to-board connectors can no longer meet the operational requirements of new-generation servers. Modern server wire-to-board connectors have evolved into a diversified product system covering low-speed signal, high-speed signal, medium power, and high-power transmission scenarios, realizing the integrated design of power and signal transmission, and adapting to the high-density integration trend of server internal hardware.

2. Core Classification of Server Wire-to-Board Connectors

According to functional attributes, current carrying capacity, structural form, and application scenarios, server wire-to-board connectors can be systematically divided into four core categories: low-power signal WTB connectors, high-speed signal WTB connectors, medium-power WTB connectors, and high-power hybrid WTB connectors. Each category has independent design specifications, performance parameters, and applicable server hardware modules, forming a complete internal connection system of servers.

2.1 Low-Power Signal Wire-to-Board Connectors

Low-power signal WTB connectors are mainly used for low-current signal transmission in server auxiliary modules, with a single-pin current rating generally below 5A and a working voltage of 50–250V DC. These connectors are widely applied in server fan speed detection, temperature sensor signal acquisition, front panel indicator signal transmission, button switch control, and hard disk status monitoring circuits. Their core design focus is miniaturization, high pin density, and low signal loss, adapting to the compact layout requirements of server auxiliary circuit boards.

In terms of structural design, low-power signal WTB connectors mostly adopt micro-pitch designs, with common pitch specifications of 1.0mm, 1.25mm, and 3.0mm. The 3.0mm pitch Micro-Fit compatible series represented by SCT3001 is a typical product in this category, featuring isolated terminal structures to provide built-in grounding protection and effectively suppress low-frequency electromagnetic interference in signal transmission. The terminals are made of high-conductivity phosphor bronze alloy with gold-plated surface treatment (30μin standard plating thickness), which significantly improves corrosion resistance and contact stability, ensuring long-term stable transmission of weak signals.

In addition, this type of connector is equipped with anti-mismating foolproof structures and latch-lock mechanisms in most server applications. The foolproof design can effectively avoid terminal damage and circuit short-circuit faults caused by incorrect plugging during server assembly and maintenance, while the flexible latch structure prevents connector loosening and signal interruption caused by chassis vibration during server operation. The termination methods mainly include crimping and surface mount (SMT), among which SMT termination is more widely used in server compact PCB layouts due to its high integration and automated assembly adaptability.

2.2 High-Speed Signal Wire-to-Board Connectors

High-speed signal WTB connectors are dedicated to high-bandwidth data transmission inside servers, mainly used in hard disk storage interfaces, RAID card signal connections, network card internal wiring, and GPU module signal interaction links. With the continuous improvement of server data processing and transmission capabilities, the signal rate of server high-speed WTB connectors has increased from the initial 6Gb/s to 12Gb/s and above, supporting SAS 3.0, SATA 3.0, and PCIe 4.0/5.0 high-speed transmission protocols.

Typical products such as the 29-pin SAS high-speed WTB connector adopt a 180° straight plug design and precision SMT packaging process, with 30μin thick gold-plated pins to reduce contact resistance and high-frequency signal attenuation. The connector is optimized for high-frequency impedance matching, with precise control of characteristic impedance at 50Ω/100Ω to eliminate signal reflection and crosstalk in high-speed transmission. It supports hot-plugging and blind-mating functions, which is crucial for server online maintenance and hardware replacement, greatly improving the maintainability of server storage and expansion modules.

Different from low-power signal connectors, high-speed WTB connectors strictly control structural symmetry and dimensional accuracy in design to ensure consistent signal transmission performance of each channel. The internal isolation ribs between pins are made of high-performance LCP insulating materials with low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, which can effectively isolate high-frequency crosstalk between adjacent signal pins and improve signal transmission integrity. In AI servers and high-performance computing (HPC) servers, high-speed WTB connectors also need to resist high-intensity electromagnetic interference generated by GPU clusters and high-power chips, so they are usually equipped with shielding covers and grounding structures to enhance electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance.

2.3 Medium-Power Wire-to-Board Connectors

Medium-power WTB connectors are the main power connection components for server core auxiliary modules, with a single-pin current rating of 5–15A, mainly used for server motherboard power supply, memory module auxiliary power, cooling fan array power supply, and optical module power supply. This type of connector balances compact size and high current bearing capacity, and is the most widely used connector type in standard rack servers.

The SCT3501 series with 3.5mm pitch and 14A single-pin current rating is a representative medium-power server WTB connector, compatible with the industry-standard Ultra-Fit series specifications. It is specially optimized for 12V server main power rail applications, covering most medium-power power supply scenarios inside servers. The connector adopts a low insertion force design, which reduces the assembly difficulty of high-density server boards and improves the efficiency of automated production and manual maintenance. The contact structure adopts a multi-point contact design, which increases the contact area and contact pressure between terminals, effectively reducing contact resistance and avoiding heating and power loss caused by poor contact under long-term high-current operation.

In terms of material selection, the insulating shell of medium-power WTB connectors uses high-temperature resistant PA66 engineering plastic, which can withstand long-term operating temperatures of -40℃ to +105℃, adapting to the high-temperature heat dissipation environment inside server chassis. The terminal material is high-strength copper alloy with tin-gold composite plating, which not only ensures high conductivity but also improves oxidation resistance and mechanical fatigue resistance, meeting the 10,000+ plugging and unplugging life requirements of server equipment.

2.4 High-Power Hybrid Wire-to-Board Connectors

High-power hybrid WTB connectors are specially developed for high-performance servers, blade servers, and AI accelerated servers, integrating power transmission and signal transmission functions in a single connector. The single-pin current rating of power terminals can reach 15A or above, and some customized products can support 20A+ high current, while retaining high-speed signal pins to realize integrated connection of power supply and signal interaction for high-power modules such as server CPU power supply, GPU power supply, and blade server node power supply.

Amphenol Cool Stack series and TE Connectivity ELCON Micro M-PIC series are typical high-power hybrid server WTB connectors, which comply with Open Compute Project (OCP) Open Rack v3 server architecture standards. These connectors adopt a compact hybrid layout design, with power pins and signal pins arranged in partitions, which avoids power signal crosstalk and saves PCB layout space. The power terminals adopt a thickened conductive structure and multi-finger contact design, which can evenly distribute high current load, reduce local heating, and ensure stable power output under peak load conditions of servers.

In addition, high-power hybrid WTB connectors have excellent safety protection performance, with built-in over-current protection, short-circuit isolation, and anti-arc structures. When the server has instantaneous current surge or circuit failure, the connector can effectively isolate the fault current to avoid burning the motherboard and core hardware. The IP20 and above protection level prevents dust and small debris from entering the contact gap, ensuring long-term stable operation in high-density data center environments.

3. Key Technical Performance Parameters of Server WTB Connectors

The performance evaluation of server wire-to-board connectors covers electrical performance, mechanical performance, environmental adaptability, and reliability indicators, all of which are far higher than industrial and consumer-grade connector standards, forming a complete server-specific performance evaluation system.

3.1 Electrical Performance Indicators

Electrical performance is the core indicator of server WTB connectors, directly determining the power transmission efficiency and signal transmission quality of servers. The main parameters include contact resistance, insulation resistance, withstand voltage, current carrying capacity, and signal transmission impedance. The contact resistance of server-grade WTB connectors is strictly controlled below 10mΩ, far lower than the 20mΩ standard of ordinary industrial connectors, which can effectively reduce power loss and heat generation during long-term high-current operation. The insulation resistance is greater than 1000MΩ, and the withstand voltage can reach 1000V AC for 1 minute without breakdown, ensuring no leakage and short-circuit faults in high-voltage and high-density working environments.

For high-speed signal connectors, characteristic impedance accuracy, insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk indicators are key evaluation criteria. The impedance tolerance is controlled within ±5Ω, the insertion loss is less than 0.5dB at 12Gb/s rate, and the near-end crosstalk is suppressed below -30dB, ensuring zero error and low delay transmission of high-speed server data. High-power connectors support stable operation under 12V/24V server power rail voltage, with continuous current carrying capacity meeting long-term full-load operation requirements, and instantaneous surge current resistance reaching 1.5 times the rated current, adapting to the instantaneous power surge of server CPU and GPU during startup and peak operation.

3.2 Mechanical Performance Indicators

Server WTB connectors need to withstand long-term vibration, plugging and unplugging, and tensile stress, so mechanical stability is crucial. The mechanical life of all server-grade connectors is required to reach more than 10,000 plugging and unplugging cycles, with no obvious change in contact resistance and structural integrity after repeated plugging and unplugging. The insertion force is controlled within a reasonable range: low insertion force design reduces assembly difficulty, while moderate extraction force ensures that the connector will not fall off due to vibration or external pulling during server operation.

In terms of vibration and shock resistance, server WTB connectors comply with IEC 60068-2-6 and IEC 60068-2-27 international standards, which can withstand 10–2000Hz frequency sweep vibration and mechanical shock without contact interruption and structural damage. The built-in locking and anti-loosening structure can resist the continuous vibration generated by server cooling fans and hard disk operation, avoiding intermittent connection faults caused by structural loosening. The terminal tensile strength is greater than 5N, ensuring that the wire harness will not fall off from the connector during equipment handling and maintenance.

3.3 Environmental Adaptability and Reliability

Servers work in data center environments with long-term constant temperature and humidity, but they still need to adapt to extreme temperature changes during transportation, deployment, and emergency operation. The working temperature range of server WTB connectors is -40℃ to +105℃, and the storage temperature range is -55℃ to +125℃, which can adapt to extreme temperature differences in different application scenarios. The high-temperature resistance ensures that the insulating shell will not deform, melt or age rapidly under the long-term high-temperature heat dissipation environment inside the server chassis, while the low-temperature resistance avoids structural brittleness and contact failure in low-temperature standby scenarios.

In terms of environmental protection and durability, server WTB connectors adopt halogen-free, low-smoke, and flame-retardant materials, complying with UL94 V-0 flame retardant standards, which can effectively prevent the spread of fire in case of server circuit failure and improve the safety of data center equipment. The gold-plated contact surface has excellent oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, which can resist the erosion of trace moisture and dust in the data center air, ensuring stable electrical contact for more than 5 years of long-term continuous operation. In addition, the connectors pass strict salt spray test and damp heat test, meeting the long-term reliability requirements of industrial-grade data center operation.

4. Typical Application Scenarios in Server Systems

Server wire-to-board connectors run through all functional modules of the server, realizing the connection and interaction of power and signals between all internal hardware components. The core application scenarios include motherboard auxiliary circuit connection, storage module connection, cooling system connection, and high-performance acceleration module connection.

In the server motherboard system, low-power signal WTB connectors are responsible for connecting temperature sensors, speed sensors, and front panel control circuits, real-time collecting server operating status data and realizing human-computer interaction functions. Medium-power WTB connectors undertake the power supply of motherboard chipset, memory module, and expansion card slots, ensuring stable power supply for core auxiliary circuits. High-power hybrid connectors are used for CPU and motherboard main power supply connection, bearing the main power load of the server.

In the server storage system, high-speed signal WTB connectors are the core connection components of SAS/SATA hard disks and solid-state drives (SSDs). Through 12Gb/s high-speed transmission performance, they realize high-speed reading and writing of server storage data and support RAID array data redundant storage functions. The hot-plugging function of the connectors allows operators to replace faulty hard disks without shutting down the server, ensuring the continuous operation of data center business.

In the server cooling system, multiple medium-power WTB connectors are used for the power supply and speed signal detection of chassis fans and CPU cooling fans. The stable power connection ensures the continuous operation of the cooling system, and the real-time signal transmission realizes the intelligent speed regulation of fans according to the server temperature, balancing cooling efficiency and energy consumption. In high-density blade servers and AI servers, high-power WTB connector arrays are used to support the operation of high-power cooling fan groups and liquid cooling auxiliary modules.

In addition, in server network communication modules and GPU acceleration modules, high-speed and high-power hybrid WTB connectors realize signal interaction and power supply between network cards, GPUs and motherboards, supporting high-bandwidth network transmission and high-performance computing capabilities of servers. With the development of edge computing and cloud computing, miniaturized high-reliability WTB connectors are also widely used in micro-servers and edge server devices, adapting to the compact and low-power design requirements of edge equipment.

5. Industry Standards and Product Iteration Trends
